Harold Mitchell AC, Chairman of the RaboDirect Rebels announced today the club has targeted to raise $500,000 in support of the Queensland Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal. To kick-start the campaign, Mr Mitchell has donated $100,000 on behalf of his family.
The Rebels’ final pre-season trial match against the Crusaders, on Saturday 5 February at AAMI Park, will be used to raise further funds towards the $500,000 target.
Speaking at AAMI Park today, Mr Mitchell said he was taken aback by the extent of the devastation in Queensland. He explained that as the state is an integral part of the rugby community it is the responsibility of other members of that community to lend their support.
He said, “This is what we want our rugby team, the Rebels, to be. We help each other, we help other Australians and we help the rugby community throughout the world. I’m delighted that Victorians can be a part of an Australian response.”
Hamish Riach, Chief Executive Officer of the Crusaders, said that his club is fully behind the Rebels’ initiative and welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the fundraising appeal in support of the people of Queensland.
A further announcement regarding the appeal will be made in advance of the game against the Crusaders on 5 February.
