The Melbourne Rebels announced today the signings of two elite training professionals, High Performance Manager, Troy Thomson and Head of Strength and Conditioning, Mark Andrews.
The Melbourne Rebels received over 100 applications from all over the world for each of the training roles and for Rod Macqueen it’s pleasing that two Australians were the stand-out candidates.
"Troy and Mark come to us with impeccable reputations and bring enormous experience to the team. A great combination, they will ensure we field the most highly tuned, fittest and strongest players possible to play our special brand of rugby." he said.
Thomson joins the Melbourne Rebels after a highly successful tenure at the Melbourne Storm where he has held the position of Sports Science Coordinator since 2001.
In commenting on his decision to take up a new challenge after nearly 10 years in NRL, Thomson said,
"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Storm and thank everyone at the club for their support. Rod Macqueen and the Melbourne Rebels coaching staff have exciting plans both on and off the field and I have been impressed by the values and culture they are instilling. I am honoured to have the opportunity to be a part of laying the foundations of Melbourne’s newest football club."
Thomson's credentials are further enhanced by the role he has played in shaping Mal Meninga's all-conquering Queensland State of Origin team where he has held the position of Trainer/Sports Scientist since 2006.
Under Mark Andrews, St George Illawarra Dragons had the best defensive record in the NRL. Currently the Head of Strength and Conditioning with Huddersfield Giants Super League Team in England, Mark can’t wait to return to Australia and to his new code.
"I couldn’t think of a better team to start my rugby union career with than the Melbourne Rebels. Rod Macqueen and his coaching staff are looking to apply a hard-nosed, no nonsense approach to training, which is fantastic and exactly what I have been doing at St George and Huddersfield. I am really excited about this opportunity.” Andrews said from his home in Yorkshire."
Assistant Coach, Mark Bakewell is thrilled with the appointment.
"Mark Andrews is an outstanding acquisition for the Rebels. He practices what he preaches and will be responsible for taking the Rebels players to another level both physically and mentally. I love his attitude and look forward to working with him in the years to come."
