Harlequins RFC hosted the Rebel Rugby X Field 7s State Championships on Wednesday, 12 September. It was an action filled day that revealed an array of exciting new young talent. The teams participating all played in their regional Final that gave them automatic inclusion into the State Championships.
There were 6 teams competing in each of the age groups (Under 14s/16s and 18s) and from the first whistle the standard was set. Players showcasing their individual skill and flair with ghosting runs, huge tackles and evasion skills that James O’Connor would have been happy with.
When Finals time came around, it was easy to see that the cream had definitely risen to the top with Westall Secondary College and Victoria University Secondary College both having two teams through. The two remaining schools who made it through were Sunshine College and Lyndhurst Secondary College.
The Finals were played in great spirit with Victoria University SC winning both the U18s and U16s division and Westall claiming the U14s State title.
A special thank you goes out to all the School teachers who supported and pushed Rugby 7s in their schools. It was a huge success and the feedback we have received has been fantastic.
“Just wanted also to say how well run the day was last week. It was the best day of sport I’ve been involved in at Lyndhurst and we are very keen to also return next year.” - A Brannon-Lyndhurst, SC
