After taking part in their first Bupa around the Bay last year and with the support of their major sponsor and cycling enthusiasts RaboDirect, Melbourne Rebels Matt Cockbain, James King and Nathan Grey will take their place yet again in the ride.
The team will line up with 17,000 other riders in the 20th celebration of Australia’s largest mass participation bike ride.
RaboDirect Rebels coach Nathan Grey rode last year and has been looking forward to this year’s event ever since.
“At the start line of Bupa Around the Bay 2011 I was certainly looking the part thanks to RaboDirect and their riding uniform, but was nervous at the thought of taking on 100km in the saddle with limited training in my legs,” said Grey.
“The pace we set, the beauty of the course, the enthusiasm and support of other riders, and the opportunity to represent the Rebels all added to an awesome experience and provided the motivation to want to do it again.
“Well the time has come and I can’t wait to don the lycra, dust off the pushy, and rip into this year’s event....bring it on!!”
His coaching partner and former Wallaby teammate Matt Cockbain is also looking forward to getting back on the steed.
“The coaching staff took on the 100km in 2011 and apart from Zane Leonard all made it home safely after wind and rain hit the course. I have admit I am very keen rider these days,” said Cockbain.
RaboDirect Rebels player James King has recently been converted to the joys of riding and is looking forward to taking part in his first Bupa Around the Bay.
“I really enjoy getting on the bike, not just on the road but even at the Velodrome here in Melbourne,” said King.
“I can’t wait to get out with the coaches as Team RaboBank…well sort of, as we will look like the professional cycling team but. Maybe one day I could ride for them."
