Tireless outside back, Lachlan Mitchell, is one of the quiet achievers at the RaboDirect Rebels. Playing as either a Centre or a Winger, the 24-year old appeared in all 16 Super Rugby fixtures for the Rebels in their debut season. Incredibly, after round 12, Lachlan had been on the field for all but two minutes of the club’s game time to that point. Lachlan scored one try in 2011, his first season of Super Rugby, away to the Blues in round 10. This score was in the running for the club’s try of the season award, thanks largely to Gareth Delves miraculous assist. The composed back joined the Rebels from English Premiership side, London Wasps, where he had been since 2008. Prior to that, Lachlan had spent time with the Waratahs Academy following impressive performances for Sydney University in the Shute Shield.Lachlan’s bravery is a feature of his play. At 178cm he is not the tallest back in Super Rugby but his attack at the contest makes him an explosive performer. It helps that he has, in his own words, “a lack of respect” for his body in physical encounters. Lachlan is not the typical identikit sportsman. Away from rugby he enjoys painting, sculpting and when given the opportunity, photography.
