Experienced and versatile, James Hilgendorf is a vital member of the RaboDirect Rebels backline. James was struck by an injury early in the round one clash against the Waratahs that ruled him out until the midpoint of the season. He made seven appearances in total in 2011, scoring a try against the Reds in round 12. The 29-year old joined the Rebels from the Kobe Steel franchise in Japan’s Top League competition. James spent two years in Japan, first with the Kinetsu Liners, before switching to the Steelers.Prior to that, he was a member of the Western Force’s foundation squad from 2006-2008, making 15 appearances for the Perth-based side. This was his second stint in Super Rugby, after first representing the Waratahs back in 2003. In between, the well-travelled utility played for Taranaki in the ITM Cup and Viadana in Italy’s Super 10. Throughout, James has had an association with Eastwood in Sydney’s Shute Shield. At the beginning of his career James represented Australia at U20 level.Although his preferred position is Flyhalf, James has played as both a Centre and Fullback in Super Rugby. He is also a capable goal kicker, who amassed a number of points during the Rebels’ 2011 preseason trial fixtures.
