The startling breakthrough of Hugh Pyle was one of the greatest success stories of the RaboDirect Rebels in 2011. The 23-year old joined the club with no previous Super Rugby experience but finished his debut season as a starting lock and a member of the postseason Wallabies training squad. On top of that, Hugh was announced as the club’s Rookie of the Year for 2011 at the end of season awards ceremony. He made his debut as a late injury replacement for the round three clash away to the Chiefs. Thereafter he cemented his place in the XV with a succession of hardworking and eye-catching performances. Hugh appeared 12 times in all over the course of the year, starting on 10 occasions and bagging two tries midway through the season. The first was a stunning intercept score in the victory away to the Western Force in round seven, the second a classy finish in the home defeat to the Highlanders in round nine.Over 200cm tall, Hugh is one of the tallest members of the Rebels squad. An unassuming character, his calm temperament off the field is in contrast to his formidable presence on it. Before joining the Rebels, Hugh was with Warringah in the NSW Shute Shield, where his performances earned him opportunities with the Brumbies and the Brumbie Runners. However, a foot injury stalled his development in 2010, creating the opportunity to join the Rebels. The bolter of 2011, Hugh Pyle has a bright future in Rugby Union and big things can be expected of the big man in the coming years at the RaboDirect Rebels.
