Alister, or Al, Campbell is a 32-year-old Lock forward who offers the RaboDirect Rebels pack great leadership, experience and consistency. Al took part in every Super Rugby fixture for the club in 2011, a great achievement, especially operating in one of the most keenly contested positions in the squad. Al also has the honour of being the first multiple try-scoring Rebel, courtesy of his double in the win over the Hurricanes at AAMI Park in round six. The Novocastrian has now accumulated over 50 Super Rugby caps, a haul that began in 2004 during a short stint with the Waratahs. From there he moved to the Brumbies, where he spent four seasons, occasionally as captain. During that time Al also competed in the Australian Rugby Championship for the Canberra Vikings. He then took the opportunity to broaden his rugby horizons and accepted an offer to join Montpellier and play on the Mediterranean coast in France’s Top 14. During his career the 201cm second rower has been awarded four Wallaby caps, debuting against France in 2005. He made his run-on debut the following year against Scotland, a moment he considers his proudest in the sport. Al has also represented Australia A on a number of occasions, captaining the side in 2007, as well as receiving national honours at schoolboy level. Al’s leadership is a feature of his involvement with the Rebels, something that can be seen clearly in his lineout organisation. He is considered one of the finest lineout exponents in the Australian game.Al is commited to balancing his playing responsibilities with other aspects of his career. During the season for example, he spends one day a week as a member of the finance industry workforce. He is also keen to promote grassroots rugby and community clubs following his experience learning the game in country NSW.
