The Melbourne Rebels have secured inside centre Billy Meakes on a one-year deal for the 2020 Super Rugby season.

The contract extension comes after another consistent year for Meakes, which saw the 28-year-old again play all16 regular season games, to take his overall Club tally to 32 matches in the last two years.

The dynamic back also enjoyed more starts in his second year at the Club, beginning in 14 games throughout 2019 while also recording a career high of five tries, establishing himself as a mainstay in the number 12 jersey.

Reflecting on the announcement today, Meakes was thrilled at the prospect of continuing to call Melbourne home. “I’m very excited to re-sign with the Rebels for the 2020 season,” Meakes said.

“While 2019 ended in a very disappointing way, I feel that this current group can achieve success if we are committed to getting better and working hard every day.

“The support that I have received from the Rebels fans over the past two seasons has been second to none and I can’t wait to continue my journey here in Melbourne.”

Melbourne Rebels General Manager of Professional Rugby and Pathways, Nick Ryan, is also thrilled with the re-signing of the Rebels’ inside back. Ryan believes Meakes will be a key part of the Club’s on-field ambitions for 2020.

“Billy is someone we really value, and he has continually shown improvement over his two years at the Club,” Ryan said.

“We feel Billy is a vital component of our backline and is someone who will help continue to drive our goal of bringing success to Melbourne.

“His re-signing is a testament to our program, and we know Billy can continue to develop his game to take his performances to another level next season.”
