Victorian rugby fans are set to be treated to two mouth-watering premier Club fixtures with the first round of Dewar Shield finals to be played this weekend.
After 14 rounds of action throughout the season, eight teams have been whittled down to four, with the Melbourne Unicorns, Harlequins, Box Hill Broncos and Melbourne University First XV teams all qualifying for finals.
The Unicorns and Harlequins will battle it out for a spot in the Dewar Shield Grand Final at Romanis Reserve, while Box Hill and Melbourne Uni will fight for the chance to verse the loser of the first major final at Box Hill Rugby Club.
Harlequins will look to avenge last year’s Grand Final loss to the Unicorns and make the Toorak-based side’s path to back to back titles a more challenging one, while the Broncos will head into Saturday’s elimination final as favourites, having finished 20 points ahead of their opposition on the Dewar Shield Ladder.
Melbourne Rising Head Coach says he can’t wait to watch the first round of finals and cast his eye over a host of Victorian rugby’s most talented players.
“All four teams which have qualified for the Dewar Shield finals have been the most consistent sides of the season,” Simona said.
“Everyone knows the intensity of rugby always lifts throughout a finals series, and I expect nothing less from this year’s competition.
“The NRC isn’t too far away and I’m keen to see who can put their hand up for the Rising through some strong finals performances.”
Both Dewar Shield first round finals fixtures will be played on Saturday at 2:45pm.
In the Lindroth Cup, Victoria’s Premier women’s rugby competition, Northern Women will play Box Hill/ Quins Women at Northern Rugby Club, while Power House Women will take on Casey Women at Box Hill Rugby Club, with both games to start at 1:10pm.
