The Melbourne Rebels Super Rugby Women’s team took on the Force in hot conditions at HBF Park. With 12 debutants across the 23, the new-look Rebels team were set for a fierce battle with the rivals from the West.
A tough night in Perth saw the Force cross the line for the first three tries controlling most of the possession early.
A Rebels fightback saw the scores close to seven points with back to back tries, with the Rebels moving the ball well inside the attacking 22m.
The first came from some great awareness, with centre Crystal Mayes seeing the advantage and taking the tap with defenders back tracking.
Smart interplay between Ashley Martsers and Cassie Siataga gave space for Chanelle Kohika-Skipper to dot down her first Super Rugby try.
Not long after half time, Jayme Nuku added another five-pointer with a strong carry to jam through a tight Western Force defence. The starting hooker driving low after a tough carry around the ruck to score.
With the margin at only seven points, the Rebels pressured the Force at every breakdown, but managing possession well, the home side chipped away. Eventually scoring on the edge twice and once through midfield to seal the game.
It was a physical contest for the Rebels, with much to build on as they look to take on the Brumbies in Round 2 of the Buildcorp Super Rugby Women’s competition.
